5-Day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha Safari
Experience three of Kenya’s most celebrated safari destinations on this five-day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha safari from Nairobi. Travel through the Great Rift Valley, search for wildlife on professionally guided game drives, explore the bird-rich landscapes around Kenya’s lakes and spend time on the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara National Reserve.
5-DAY MASAI MARA, LAKE NAKURU AND LAKE NAIVASHA SAFARI OVERVIEW
This private five-day Kenya safari combines the freshwater environment of Lake Naivasha, the protected wildlife habitats of Lake Nakuru National Park and the expansive savannah of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Beginning and ending in Nairobi, the itinerary offers a varied introduction to Kenya’s Great Rift Valley landscapes, wildlife and birdlife.
Your adventure begins at Lake Naivasha with a guided boat ride and wildlife walk on Crescent Island. Depending on your chosen itinerary, you can also explore the dramatic volcanic landscape of Hell’s Gate National Park by bicycle or safari vehicle. The journey continues to Lake Nakuru National Park, an important sanctuary for black and white rhinos and a rewarding destination for game viewing and birdwatching.
Days three and four are devoted to the Masai Mara National Reserve. An afternoon game drive followed by a full day of wildlife viewing provides opportunities to search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and numerous antelope species. During the migration season, your guide may explore the Mara River area in search of migrating wildebeest and zebras.
This 5-day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha safari is suitable for couples, families, photographers and first-time visitors seeking a well-rounded Kenya safari from Nairobi. Wildlife movements are natural, so specific sightings and migration events cannot be guaranteed.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
- DAY 1:
- Nairobi - Lake Naivasha
Your five-day Kenya safari begins when you meet your professional driver-guide in Nairobi. After a short safari briefing, depart for Lake Naivasha on a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley. The journey normally takes approximately 90 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.
On arrival, take a guided boat ride across Lake Naivasha. The lake supports abundant birdlife, and you may see fish eagles, herons, kingfishers, pelicans and other waterbirds. Hippos may also be observed from the boat at a safe distance, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Continue to Crescent Island for a guided wildlife walk. The sanctuary provides opportunities to walk among freely roaming herbivores such as giraffes, zebras, waterbucks and several antelope species. Your guide will explain the island’s wildlife and natural environment as you explore on foot.
Travellers looking for a more active experience can add cycling at Hell’s Gate National Park. Alternatively, explore the park by safari vehicle and admire its cliffs, rocky formations and open landscapes. Optional activities should be confirmed when booking.
- DAY 2:
- Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, travel to Lake Nakuru National Park for a guided game drive through one of Kenya’s most important wildlife conservation areas. The park protects grassland, woodland, rocky escarpments and the alkaline lake that gives the national park its name.
Lake Nakuru is especially known as a sanctuary for black and white rhinos. During your game drive, search for rhinos, buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, waterbucks, zebras, baboons and other wildlife. Lions and leopards also inhabit the park, but predator sightings are never guaranteed.
The lake and surrounding habitats attract numerous resident and migratory birds. Flamingos may be present along the shoreline, although their numbers change according to water levels, food availability and seasonal conditions.
Your guide will select appropriate game-viewing routes based on current road conditions and recent wildlife movements, providing time for wildlife observation and photography.
- DAY 3:
- Masai Mara Half-Day
Rise early and begin the approximately four-hour journey from Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Travel through the Great Rift Valley and rural communities before reaching one of Kenya’s most renowned safari destinations.
After completing the entrance formalities, continue to your accommodation for check-in and lunch. You will have time to settle in before departing with your guide for an afternoon Masai Mara game drive.
Explore the reserve’s open grasslands and acacia-dotted plains in search of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes and big cats. Late afternoon can be a rewarding time for game viewing as temperatures begin to cool and many animals become more active.
Return to your accommodation after the game drive and relax in the natural surroundings of the Masai Mara.
- DAY 4:
- Masai Mara Full Day Game Drive
Spend a full day exploring the Masai Mara National Reserve with your professional safari guide. The reserve’s grasslands, riverine forests and seasonal waterways support a remarkable diversity of mammals and birds.
Your guide will plan the day around recent wildlife movements and game-viewing conditions. Possible sightings include lions, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and several gazelle and antelope species. Black rhinos occur in the wider ecosystem but are uncommon and difficult to find.
If you travel during the migration period, your guide may take you towards the Mara River to look for migrating wildebeest and zebras. The timing and location of the Great Migration are influenced by rainfall and grazing conditions. River crossings are unpredictable and cannot be promised on any particular day.
After an extensive day of Masai Mara game viewing and wildlife photography, return to your accommodation for the evening.
- DAY 5:
- Masai Mara - Nairobi
After breakfast, check out of your accommodation and begin the return journey from the Masai Mara to Nairobi. The drive generally takes approximately five to six hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and the location of your accommodation.
On arrival in Nairobi, your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or transfer you to the airport for your onward flight. Travellers departing on the same day should allow sufficient time for possible traffic or road delays.
Your five-day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha safari concludes in Nairobi after exploring three distinctive wildlife destinations in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley and Masai Mara ecosystem.

Many travelers ask us when the best time is to visit Tanzania. The answer is … there is not one right answer. It depends on what you want to see, where you want to go, your budget, and your interests.
- Dry Season (June to October & December to February):Â These months are ideal for safaris and beach visits due to the pleasant weather and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. However, expect higher hotel rates and more crowded parks and attractions.
- Mid-Season (March & November): This period offers a balance of moderate hotel rates and fewer tourists. The weather can be variable, and some attractions might have limited availability (due to rain), but you still get great wildlife sightings and a more relaxed safari experience.
- Wet Season (April & May):Â Perfect for budget-conscious travelers, the low season features the lowest hotel rates and the least crowded parks. The heavy rains make the scenery vibrant and lush, but travel plans can be affected by the weather.
